Star Fellowship 2014
I have an extensive background working with government and NGOs such as the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Department of Education, and International Rescue Committee. However, my experience as a Running Start Star Fellow was my first true experience working with an elected official. Since I finished my fellowship in April 2014, I started working with SESH Global in Guangzhou, China. It is an NGO that promotes innovative and creative ways to promote sexual health. Through this position, I have directed and lead the “Sex + Health” Image Contest for youth in China. I presented about sexual health to different universities and the U.S. Consulate in Guangzhou. Sexual health is an important issue, especially for women, because it is often seen as a shameful thing. I believe that reproductive rights are a women’s rights issue and I am proud to continue to work on issues that promote gender equality.
Running Start’s Impact
Before Running Start, I had a vague idea that I wanted to impact public policy and be an elected official but I had no idea where to start or how to do it. The Star Fellowship offered me the chance to work with the first Chinese-American Congresswoman from New York and meet accomplished, diverse women who were passionate about helping other women succeed. Furthermore, I became more vocal and more passionate about taking action in any way that I could in the community. I was more confident and ready to lead and help lead after I finished my fellowship. Running Start was the first organization to ask me to run for office and now I want to ask other women to run as well.
