Helen Lei was raised in San Francisco, California. Helen attended UCLA and majored in Global Studies and Asian American Studies. During her undergraduate years Helen was heavily involved with Asian Pacific Islander American issues on campus. Immediately after graduating, she took a internship with the Organization of Chinese Americans as a congressional intern for Congresswoman Laura Richardson. After Helen’s interning experience on the Hill, she knew that public policy was indeed what she wanted to focus on in her career.
After four months in California, Helen returns to Washington as a Star Fellow. Helen is very excited that she has the opportunity to participate as a Running Start Star Fellow. As a fellow, she will be interning in both Congresswoman Laura Richardson’s office (D-CA 37) and Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ08). She is excited to return to Richardson’s Office as well as work for Gifford’s office. She believes that these two office would be able to give her a more comprehensive view of the different political climates on the Hill and offer her more experience with dealing with different sets of demographics. Helen is ecstatic and thankful for the many doors that Star Fellows will open for her and is very excited about getting to know her Fellows.
