Fiona Lowenstein participated in Running Start’s five-day program last summer. What was especially inspiring about the program was the chance to meet other high school girls who are interested in politics. Since attending the program, she has dedicated much of her time towards trying to establish a network of politically invested girls like herself.
In 2008, Fiona created a website called BarbarasAngels.com to educate and girls her age about politics, leadership, and feminism. She features interviews with women in politics, book reviews, and blogs frequently about issues she thinks will interest girls her age. Through this medium, she hopes to inspire and integrate a new generation of girls. Fiona also blogs for Woosh! (TheGirlsLeadershipInstitute.org/blog), the Girl’s Leadership Institute’s blog, hoping to establish a network of politically interested girls this way, as well.
Fiona became interested in politics several years ago, when she been interning with U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney at the age of twelve years old. Because of this, she was able to experience what life in a political office is like at a very young age. At school she is a member of her school’s Model UN team, and last summer she attended the Junior Statesmen Association, at Princeton University, where she took AP Comparative Politics, debated current issues plaguing our country, and got the chance to meet several fascinating speakers such as the ambassador from Iraq. She believes it is especially important to pursue an interest on even the lowest levels…like at school or in a small community.
Last spring, Fiona was featured in the book, She’s Out There: Essays by 35 Women Who Aspire To Lead The Nation. The book was a compilation of essays written by women and girls under the age of 35 who want to go into politics one day. Being in She’s Out There, offered Fiona lot of unique opportunities such as a book signing, a chance to blog for the Huffington Post, and two appearances on the National News.
Fiona’s other passion is music. She plays guitar, piano, sings, and writes her own songs. She has a channel on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/user/fionalowenstein) where she showcases her original songs and covers of songs she loves.
Fiona is currently a sophomore in New York City.
