Running Start’s Elect Her: Campus Women Win is coming to Stony Brook University! This Elect Her program will be facilitated by Melissa Richmond. In collaboration with American Association of University Women (AAUW), Running Start is working to highlight programs that grow the pipeline of women running for elected office.
Elect Her is a training program that encourages women to run for student government on their college or university campuses. Research has shown that women who run for student body elections in college are more likely to run for office as adults. The training addresses the disparity between the high percentage of women in colleges and universities and their low percentage in student governments.
The day-long Elect Her training teaches students why more women are needed in student government and provides them with the skills to run successful student body campaigns. These women will learn how to create campaign messages and communicate them effectively as well as how to reach out and mobilize voters on campus.
Running Start and AAUW’s collaboration under Elect Her focuses on our collective efforts to increase the number of women in elected office. With the Elect Her program, the goal is to increase the number of women involved in collegiate student government, which would hopefully lead to an increase in the number of women who run for political office.
