Jessica Murphy found her love of empowering young women to enter politics as a sophomore in college. In 2014, Jessica implemented a Girls Political Leadership & Empowerment weekly workshop at KIPP DC: Discover Academy. The developed curriculum included career, leadership, and political development, introduced in the form of lectures, guest speakers, movies, and a hip-hop dance performance. Working with the middle-school aged girls each week is one of Jessica’s fondest memories.
Currently, Jessica is the Staff Assistant at Running Start. Each day she hopes to work to fulfill Running Start’s mission statement because she believes that government needs to look more diverse in order to make the most meaningful decisions.
Jessica graduated from American University in May 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies. Her time at American University lead to valuable political and leadership training opportunities. Jessica earned three additional certificates from the School of Public Affairs Advanced Leadership Program, the Campaign Management Institute, and the Women, Policy & Political Leadership Program.
Jessica began at Running Start as an Intern in January 2015. Her additional professional experience includes working as the Marketing Manager at upace, interning as a legislative intern for Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand, and volunteering for Obama for America. One day she hopes to run for political office in New York.
