The 8th Annual Women to Watch Awards, held on April 2nd, celebrated amazing women leaders who are role models for us all. We feature a few photos below, but take a few minutes to view our Facebook albums and tag yourself and your friends! Our Luncheon album is here and our Awards dinner album is here. You can check out the great press we got here.

This year, we tried a few new things and we think they were wild successes!

For the first time, we held a special luncheon the same day as the dinner, featuring Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri and our Emerging Young Leader Award Finalists. This luncheon was open to area young women and set the day’s tone of inspiration and celebration.

Our next gambit featured Ambassador Capricia Marshall as the moderator of a Ground Breakers Discussion amongst women who have each been firsts in their field. Making History Award winner, Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri; Role Model Award winner, United States Army Reserve Staff Sergeant Jennifer Hunt; and Political Rising Star Award winner, Director of Strategic Initiatives & Coalitions at the National Republican Congressional Committee Bettina Inclán discussed their experiences and showed everyone that we can all dare to achieve, even when it means blazing our own trail.

In a similar theme, we honored the 20 women of the United States Senate with our Trailblazer Award, which was accepted by Senators Kelly Ayotte and Mazie Hirono. Senators Ayotte and Hirono spoke at length about the importance of women’s leadership and in support of Running Start’s work in bringing young women to politics.

We topped off the dinner with the exciting announcement of our Emerging Young Leader Award winner from an impressive group of five finalists in our nation-wide competition, the first of its kind for Running Start. We were pleased to have Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard announce that her constituent, Brittany Amano, won the award.

In the middle of our planned show, we were pleasantly surprised by a visit from a Running Start supporter, a former Woman to Watch, and the brand new winner of the Democratic primary in the DC mayoral race! Councilmember Muriel Bowser took up our celebration of women’s leadership and expressed enthusiasm for Running Start’s mission.

We could not have been more pleased and excited about this fantastic night and we left Women to Watch feeling inspired and ready to take on our own challenges and rise to leadership ourselves. Thank you to our sponsors, our hosts and co-hosts, and our supportive Congressional Host Committee, which this year included 60 of the 99 women in Congress!

The Women to Watch Awards, held each spring in Washington, DC, celebrates Running Start’s efforts to inspire young women to run for public office. The annual event honors some of the most impressive young women in the country, including some of the youngest women in Congress and other young women leaders who represent the best of their respective professions. By honoring these young women, Running Start hopes to inspire them–and others like them–to take their leadership to another level.

This year, our Emerging Young Leader honoree
was selected by a contest and committee.
